Reorg under way
When I decided to tackle making this site into some sort of digital personal assistant, I had some concept of how the site would work, but no real clue about the practical nature of the site. I still don't have much of an idea, but I think I'm closer to whatever inital vision I had in mind.
I think the site being in a perpetual state of wrong is a bit of the point though. One of my tenents these days is that there's no such thing as perfect. I probably go a bit further than most in saying there's no such thing as good enough either. The point is, I should ship however far I get the site, but I should realize that I will immediately see problems and the next revision is right around the corner.
The idea I've been going towards is this system called the Zettelkasten (German for Slip-Box I believe). It was a system devised by this guy who became a relatively famous Sociologist who was a very productive writer. I think the system sounds like a good idea and so I'm trying to embrace it in whatever limited capacity I have.
I had setup a few artificial barriers that I wanted to overcome in the process, so there's elements of the system I have yet to implement, but the latest changes to the site resolved nearly all of those. There are some minor bugs I still need to fix, but honestly the big ones are resolved. I wanted to have my sources in a good place with stable links. I wanted to flatten out the structure as much as possible. I also wanted to move the blog away from front and center on the landing page. I managed to finish those implementation details in the recent few days, so I think I'm more or less ready to rock.
The theory going forward is that this site will become an extension of my brain. It's no surprise that the human brain is terrible at certain things. And the idea is that rather than limp along not dealing with those failings, it would be better to build systems that shore those up, and allow my brain to focus on the things it's good at.
I'm not sure that this site will be the final form of this information. Thankfully, given I'm using markdown, changing to a different form shouldn't be difficult to overcome.
For the balance of the year, I'm probably going to try and read one more book, but I also want to build out a bit more of the stuff here. I've started 3 book writeups in my sources, but none of them are in good shape yet. More important than that though, I want to work on my notes.
Oh, one other thing I want to ponder. Unlike Luhmann's system, this system has technical super-powers in the form of search and git. Search will become progressively important with growing content, but git is interesting. It's not a big deal if I remove a note from the latest site- it will still exist in history. As such, I don't really need to be careful with my notes. If something stops being relevant, I can prune it. I get that if my model ends up being wrong that the story of that discovery may be relevant, which is why I'm up in the air on what all this means to me, but I think the implications are worth thinking about.
