Thinking About Notes
I've been thinking a lot about how to get started with my notes, and the implications of such. The thing is, for you the casual browser, the organization of my notes won't matter. For you, the links will be how you navigate the notes. I think my interaction with the system, will be more on file side, so where and how I create an organization is important.
The original method per my undestanding of Luhmann's work felt pretty intentional. I think it probably was given it was a paper based system with almost 100k cards in it.
I think what has bothered me is that in reading about different implementations, especially digital, some people abandoned the indexing system all together, opting for using date hashes or something else to keep track of notes. My struggle is this. Adding notes is the most obvious time I would browse the existing notes. The act of adding notes and specifying a home for a slip are the best times for serendipity to occur. At the very least, it's a time where I may review older notes and remind myself about what I've read, which is one of the core purposes of this exercise. Blindly adding notes without thought to me is the path where this process is just a waste of time, so I'm very concerned about it.
Additionally, I am thinking down the road, and what this system will feel like after a few hundred or thousand notes. Is it realistic to browse the system at that point? Honestly this idea stresses me out. I want this system to be antifragile and impactful. A system that includes that many notes sounds crazy. I start to wonder if I shouldn't build in some sort of winnowing feature, or at least something that reminds me of cards with few connections so I can consider how to build them out.
Obviously I'm over thinking this whole setup, but I've come to accept that as a strength rather than a limitation.
